Bella Itzig (1749-1824)

married

Levin Jacob Salomon Bartholdy

Levin Jacob Salomon adopted the surname Bartholdy, from the previous owners of his estate, on his conversion to Christianity.

Their daughter Lea Salomon married Abraham Mendelssohn (1776-1835).  They, too, adopted the surname Bartholdy when they decided to raise their children as Christians in order for them to have better futures.  Abraham Mendelssohn was the son of Moses Mendelssohn and the father of composer Felix Mendelssohn.  He was wont to tell people that he started life as his father's son, and was now his son's father.

Bella and Levin Jacob's daughter Julie Salomon married Karl Wilhelm Ludwig Heyse (1797-1855).  Their son, the poet Paul Heyse (1830-) won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1910.
