Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirch (1808-1888)

A leading figure in the Orthodox movement in Judaism.  His son-in-law Salomon and son Joseph were  prominent Rabbis as well.

 Samson also had a son Mendel  Hirsch, Ph. D. (1853-1900), whose daughter Rachel (1870-1953) was one of the first 5 women appointed professor in Prussia.  The year she received her MD degree, 1904, only 8 other women did so in Germany.

Yet another son, Naftali, Dr. jur. (1844-1903) was a Notar in Frankfurt/Main and cofounder of the Freie Vereinigung fuer die Interessen des orthodoxen Judentums (Free Union for the Interests of Orthodox Judaism).
